Alumni Spotlight- Robbie Wright

WASHINGTON, PA- For Robbie Wright the summer of 1990 was unlike any other. At the age of 14, he was about to embark on a journey that he would cherish deeply for many years to come. It was during this summer that Wright found himself a roster spot on the 1990 Pony League World Series from Pasadena, TX. He and his teammates worked hard for the opportunity to travel all the way to Washington, PA to represent his hometown in the 39th Pony League World Series.

While in Washington Wright and his teammates were able to not only play a game they loved, but making many memories doing so. One memory in particular that is very prominent of Robbie’s World Series run that summer, beating South Korea 5-2. Wright went 3 for 3 during this game. Beating South Korea was one of the greatest achievements of that 1990 team from east Texas. South Korea had won the previous two Pony League World Series. Beating South Korea made Pasadena think and feel like they were on top of the world. Even though Robbie and his team left Pennsylvania empty handed, Wright said the achievement of competing in the World Series and edging out South Korea for a win had them beaming from ear-to-ear as if they had won it all.

Being a part of that 1990 Pasadena team gave Wright the opportunity to have 15 great teammates. In addition, he gained 5 lifelong friends. One being his business partner to this day. Wright enjoyed every moment being a part of the 1990 Pony World Series.

Wright went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin. Eventually getting married and having kids of his own to share his knowledge with. He and his wife currently reside in Bellaire, TX. To this day, baseball remains a very important part of Robbie’s life.  He enjoys coaching his son’s team and recalls the flood of memories that came back to him about his Pony World Series appearance while watching his team flourish.

If Wright could give any current Pony League Baseball player advice it is, “To get it while you can and enjoy it.”

Life isn’t all fun and innocent when you get older.  Pony League Baseball has the potential to provide you with opportunities you could never imagine and Wright believes it is important to seize those while you can. This might be as simple as sleeping in a dorm for the first time, like he did at Washington Jefferson, or as big as traveling across the country without your parents for the first time. These things are all important life events and to do them with a cohort of great teammates while playing the sport you love makes the experience that much sweeter in the end.
