Day 3 Recap at the Palomino European Zone Championships

Day three, the last day of pool play at the Palomino European Zone Championships in Stuttgart, Germany witnessed two comebacks in the two early games of the day. Paderborn finished the round undefeated as Group B’s top team, following its come-from-behind win against Netherlands United. In Group A, the host Stuttgart Reds proved that it will be a force to be reckoned with against any team they play, winning two decisive games and finishing as the group’s top team at 3-0, setting up for what will be an exciting quarterfinal round Saturday.

GM #8 Paderborn Untouchables 11  Netherlands United 10


Crawling out of a 10-0 deficit going into the bottom of the third inning, the Paderborn Untouchables came back to defeat Netherlands United 11-10 to move to 3-0 and claim the top spot in Group B heading into tomorrow’s knockout stage. Netherlands United shot out of the gate in the top of the first, scoring six runs on just two hits, while taking advantage of five walks, two errors, a balk by Paderborn. The Dutch added to their lead in the top of the third, scoring four runs thanks to an RBI double by Lucca Van der Schouw, a two-RBI triple by Lucas Erkeland and a sacrifice fly by Jip Filius. Down 10-0, the Germans began to dig out of the hole they dug for themselves in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Luca Rammelmann reached on an error that allowed Merlin Bendlin to score and Zan Primozic to advance to third. Max Eckermann singled, scoring Primozic and moving Rammelmann around to third base. Then, Landislaus Landwehr hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Rammelmann. A hit by pitch to Darren Heisel put two men on. Jonathan Weyer singled, as Eckermann scored from second. Both runners stole a bag. Then, Florian Herwig reached on an error that scored Heisel. Bendlin cranked a two-RBI double, completing the scoring for Paderborn in the inning with the score 10-7. Germany put up a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Heisel hit an RBI single and Weyer launched an RBI double. In the fifth, Bendlin scored on a wild pitch and Rammelmann scored on a fielder’s choice (11-10). Paderborn’s Bjarne Reinhardt did the heavy lifting on the mound, going 6.2 innings for the win. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out seven. He didn’t allow a run in the game’s final four innings. Erkeland had a game-high three RBI for Netherlands, while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Four players recorded multi-hit games for Paderborn, as Bendlin and Weyr paced the club with two RBI each. Paderborn’s victory gave it a 3-0 record at the conclusion of pool play. The team will play tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against the Belgium National Team for a spot in Sunday’s semifinals. For Netherlands United, because of the tie-breaker, it advanced to tomorrow’s knockout stage, as Group B’s second team. It will take on the Stuttgart Reds at 5:30 p.m. local time Stuttgart.

GM #9: Swiss National Team 8  North State Warriors 7


Just like Poland had done the day before, the Swiss National Team scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk it off against the North State Warriors 8-7. Switzerland struck first in the bottom of the first inning, whe Luka Ivanisevic singled home Livio Bundi, who had just hit a triple. Daniel Poort and Y. Sutter were both dealing on the mound for their respective teams through four innings. The dam finally broke on Sutter in the top of the fifth. After allowing a single and walking a batter, he struck out the next two, but then was lifted for Livio Bundi, after he walked another. Bundi got the strikeout he was looking for, but the wild pitch allowed Dylan Braak to make it safely to first, while Wesley Jansen made it home. A Swiss error on the next at-bat to Myron van Atten allowed him to reach second, while Justin Roobol and Bas Houtkamp both scored and Braak made it around to third. Aloys von Loenen knocked a two-RBI single to give North State a 5-1 lead. North State made it 7-1 by the bottom of the seventh, when Switzerland went on its rally. With one out and runners on second and third, Denyo Benz reached on an error that scored Dominik Sherrer and moved Nicholas Siemers 90-feet. Bundi grounded into a fielder’s choice for the inning’s second out, but he scored Siemers. Another error allowed Ivanisevic to reach base and Benz and Bundi to score (7-5). Aron Augsburger doubled, scoring Ivanisevic. A balk advanced Augsburger to third. Augsburger later scored on North State’s fourth error of the inning. The Warriors then walked the bases loaded for Siemers again, who reached on one final error, which proved to be the deciding game ender (8-7).  With the win, the Swiss is slated in third place in Group B and will battle the Paris University Club tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. For the North State Warriors, it will take on the Polish National Team tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. local time Stuttgart.

GM #10: Stuttgart Reds 8  Poland National Team 2


The host Stuttgart Reds used six different pitchers to keep Poland’s National Team off-balance at the plate with six different looks. The Reds’ pitching staff kept Poland’s bats in check and improved to 2-0 on the tournament, after an 8-2 win. Stuttgart broke open the scoring in the bottom of the second, when Jerome Noso singled, eventually scoring Yannick Witt from second. Poland countered in the top of the third, when Kacper Blacha singled and Lukasz Krzemienowski scored on a Stuttgart error. The Germans took back the lead and never surrendered it, after scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Moritz van Bergen singled home Fridolin Fink and Oscar Hundt later singled in van Bergen to make it 3-1. Poland scored its final run in the top of the fourth, when Tobiasz Swiatlowski singled home Jan Pruszynski. The Reds pitching combination of Max Marinoff, Philip Jager and Han Seeungwo was an effective one of the game’s final three innings. The trio didn’t allow a run on one hit and three walks, while striking out three. Meanwhile, the Germans continued to add runs in the final three frames, highlighted by van Bergen’s two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. He led the game with three RBI, while he, Fink and Noso each had two hits apiece. Pruszynski went 3-for-3 to lead Poland in the loss. Stuttgart played next in Game #12 to end the day. Poland faces the North State Warriors at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.

GM #11: Belgium National Team 10  Paris University Club 3


Belgium’s offense was too much to overcome for the Paris University Club in the fourth game of day three, as the Belgians won 9-3 and punched their ticket to the tournament’s knockout stage. Tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Belgium’s Tomasz Silva doubled and moved to third on a groundout. Arthur Heymans hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Silva, before Zion De Brauwer launched a solo home run to give Belgium the game’s momentum. Paris left two runners stranded on base in the top of the fifth, when Belgium broke the game open thanks to some extra-base hits. Nathan Kaschl led off the inning with a double and then scored when Kieran Gibson tripled. After two outs, Ferre Vanhees doubled in Gibson (7-3). Heymans then reached on an error that allowed Vanhees to score. After an intentional walk to De Brauwer and Quentin Devreese reached on another Paris error, Luca Pinatelli scored two, when he reached on an error (10-3). T. Heymans limited the French’s damage on the mound. He went six innings, and despite allowing 10 hits and a walk, he held Paris to just three runs, while striking out three for the win. Vanhees and Kaschl both had multi-hit games from Belgium, while it was Ahmed Guesima who led Paris at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. The win gave the Belgium National Team two wins, which gave the squad a spot in Saturday’s knockout stage. For Paris, it dropped to fourth place in Group A and is slated to face the Swiss National Team at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow local time Stuttgart.

GM #12: Stuttgart Reds 14  Belgium National Team 4 (F/5)


Host Stuttgart rolled easily to a 14-4 victory in five innings over the Belgium National Team in the final game of day three, which was a makeup of yesterday’s final game that was postponed due to weather. The Germans used a 12-run bottom of the second inning to win convincingly. Stuttgart used six hits and took advantage of three walks, three errors and a wild pitch to score its 12 runs in the inning. Belgium picked up a run in the top of the third and two runs in the top of the fifth, but Philip Jager’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave Stuttgart a win by way of the 10-run rule. Moritz van Bergen led the Germans at the plate going 3-for-4, while he and three of his teammates each had two RBIs apiece. For Belgium, Arthur Heyman did his part offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Quentin Devreese also had two RBI, tying the game-high. Matching their countrymen from Paderborn, Stuttgart finished pool play undefeated at 3-0 as the top team in Group A. It will await Netherlands United at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow for a spot in the tournament’s semifinals. Belgium dropped to 2-1, but still took second in Group A at the completion of pool play. The Belgians will face the unbeaten Paderborn Untouchables tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. local time Stuttgart in the knockout stage.
